The Hoad, Ulverston's iconic Landmark

Ulverston lies just four miles south of the Lake District National Park so has easy access to some of the area's scenic walks and stunning views.

The town is a traditional market town, is officially a festival town, and its place on the map secure on account of being the birthplace of Stan Laurel. Visually speaking, the Sir John Barrow Monument - also known as 'the Hoad' - is the town's trademark structure and greets you on the approaches to the town.

Take the M6 as far as Junction 36 At the top of the M6 slip road, take A590 following the signs for Barrow-in-Furness. Continue on the dual carriageway for a mile or so and then take the exit onto the continuation of the A590 towards Barrow-in-Furness. Stay on this road for about 15 miles, up a very steep hill, along the High Newton by-pass and down to Newby Bridge.
